Two Decades Later:
Post-Soviet Transformations in the Balkans and Eastern and Central Europe
After the collapse of the so-called Iron Curtain, the post-Soviet world changed dramatically, as one could expect. The borders of the Soviet Union were opened, and the former Soviet republics, the Balkans and Eastern and Central European countries experienced the emergence of new political systems (aspiring to democracy) and a free market economy. The changes that took place at that time have resulted in many historically significant social dynamics. Initially, many viewed the post-Soviet transformations with enthusiasm. Later, a degree of nostalgia for the communist past began to emerge. As time has shown, it is predominantly representatives of the political and business elite, rather than ordinary citizens, who have benefited (economically) from the changes brought about by the fall of the Soviet Union.
Today, values associated with democracy are much less evident in the former Soviet republics. In contrast, the Balkans, Central Europe and some Eastern European countries, especially those that have joined the European Union, are more accepting of the economic and societal changes of the past two decades.
This interdisciplinary conference will bring together scholars from the East and the West for a one-day meeting devoted to the political, socioeconomic, and cultural dynamics in the former Soviet Bloc after the collapse of the Soviet Union. We invite scholars to explore the multidimensional character of the post-Soviet changes as well as their effects on various realms of socio-cultural life in both the post-communist states and their diaspora communities. We welcome innovative ideas, seeking to (re)define the concept of post-Soviet “transformation.”
Proposals involving cross-national comparisons are encouraged. Submissions can focus on a variety of areas and topics including, but not limited to, the following: politics, economy, foreign relations, national security, language, literature, film and media, history, culture, folklore, identity and gender.
* We also invite papers on a broad range of topics dealing with the Balkans and Eastern and Central Europe for discussions in an international context.
Application Procedure:
Please send an abstract of your paper (maximum 500 words) and Curriculum Vitae, to kaceebs2@naver.com by Tuesday, March 1st, 2011.
